A new study says overweight teens with Type-2 diabetes are having a very difficult time managing the ailment.

Listen:

Riley Hospital for Children's Dr. Tamara Hannon says the nationwide study is the first and only one of its kind. Results show that half of the therapies to manage blood sugar in newly diagnosed teens failed within only a few years. The study shows one in five teens later suffered complications. Dr. Hannon says diagnosed adults can go for many years on only oral medication. She says teens still have developmental processes which requires higher levels of insulin.

However, she says they're still investigating the impact of the ailment on teens and kids. Dr. Hannon says proper diet and weight loss are crucial to delaying the onset of diabetes or reversing it altogether. Hannon says the fight against childhood diabetes requires a multi-layered effort on the part of parents, schools and society in general. Currently, one-third of American children and teens are overwight or obese.
