'Bucket list' Texas baby loses battle with genetic disease - FOX 4 News

HOUSTON -- A five-month-old Texas baby known for her "bucket list" blog that gained thousands of followers and made headlines across the country has died.

Avery Lynn Canahuati, from Houston, passed away Monday afternoon after one of her lungs collapsed, her family announced on their blog Tuesday, myFOXhouston.com reported.

Avery was diagnosed early last month with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA Type 1, an incurable genetic disease.

Her parents started the blog, written from their daughter's point of view, to raise awareness of SMA and to celebrate the little girl's life so she could cross things off her "bucket list."

In the past week, Avery threw out the first pitch at a Sugar Land Skeeters baseball game, got a (fake) tattoo, and smiled for a final picture. The picture was taken just 15-20 minutes before one of her lungs collapsed, and she went into cardiac arrest. Avery died at a hospital.

"Avery's passing this quickly came as a complete shock to all of us, as she had just been given a thumbs up at her last doctors appointment only three days ago," Avery's father, Mike Canahuati, wrote on the blog Tuesday.

"While we were aware of the severity of her diagnosis, we never lost hope for Avery and even in her passing, we still have hope for our daughter and all of her friends."

In less than a month, "Avery's Bucket List" snowballed to more than three million page views.
