Breastfeeding goals: Most new moms, over 85%, intend to breastfeed their babies for at least three months, but two thirds fail to meet that goal -- and 15% of them stop before leaving the hospital with their newborns, a new study shows. Two things seem to help moms succeed in early days, researchers say: Nursing the baby within an hour of giving birth and not supplementing with formula in the hospital. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding exclusively for at the least the first six months.- Cancer news: Cancer researchers meeting in Chicago reported progress in the fight against melanoma, breast and prostate cancer in new treatment studies. But other research shows that treatment can come with a high price: A study of women treated with chest radiation for childhood cancers found they had a greatly increased risk for breast cancer.
- Bedbug blast: Do-it-yourself bug bombs and other insect foggers are useless against bedbug invasions, a new study confirms. The critters are too good at hiding from the mist and are not particularly sensitive to the insecticides anyway, researchers say. Better idea: hire an exterminator.
Today's talker: The relatives of a Georgia man who died during a three-way sex romp will collect a $3 million malpractice award from his heart doctor. Their winning argument: The doctor failed to warn the 31-year-old man not to engage in strenuous physical activities before a stress test planned the next day to evaluate his chest pain. The jury did decide that the man was 40% responsible for his own death.
