TACOMA, WAâ"
We don't need to tell you the importance of sunscreen. After all, you live in Houston for crying out loud. So imagine if your child's school told you that your kid wasn't allowed to apply sunscreen while at school unless they had a doctor's note?! That's exactly what a Tacoma, Washington mother was told. In fact, it's a requirement by state.
School officials say they require a doctor's note because there are so many additives in lotions and sunscreens. All that could cause an allergic reaction and in some children, they have to really monitor that.
That sounds fair enough, but Jesse Michener doesn't feel that justifies what happened to her daughters. She sent her girls to school on what started off as a rainy day. But the rain cleared and out came the sun. But because of the law, the girls weren't able to do much to protect themselves.
"But they couldn't even re-apply without a doctor's note. They couldn't even carry it in their backpack. And they couldn't even do something as simple as wear a hat because hats are not allowed at school," Michener said.
The school says it was all a case of bad timing, and that the staff just didn't realize the kids were getting burned until the end of the day.
Maybe the school should cool of this topic with a little indoor recess.
