Test tube people: Louise Brown has a lot of company. In-vitro fertilization (IVF) has led to the birth of 5 million people since Brown, the first so-called test tube baby, was born in 1978, a new report says. Each year now, about 350,000 babies, or 0.3% of the world's newborns, arrive after IVF --- a process in which sperm and egg are joined in a lab dish before the resulting embryo is transferred to the womb -- says a European medical group. The procedure works about one third of the time. Some religious groups continue to frown on it.- Abortion law: A federal judge Sunday temporarily stopped Mississippi from enforcing a new law that could close the state's only abortion clinic. The judge set a hearing for July 11 on the law, which requires abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. Critics say the law is an unconstitutional attempt to ban abortions; supporters say it protects women.
- Salad recall: Dole has recalled 2,598 cases of Hearts of Romaine salad sold in nine states, due to fears of listeria contamination, the Food and Drug Administration says. This is Dole's third salad recall in three months, MSNBC reports.
Today's talker: A few months ago, it was the 'cinnamon challenge' sending kids to hospitals. Now, it's something called 'the salt and ice challenge' -- and this one looks like it can have particularly painful consequences. A 12-year-old boy in Pennsylvania ended up with serious, second-decree cold injuries -- basically, a case of frostbite that causes blistering but is expected to heal without permanent damage -- after friends inspired by YouTube and Facebook videos made a huge cross on his back with salt and then pressed ice into the pattern for 20 minutes. The result was a painful, red mess, and doctors say some kids have been even more badly injured.
