The company Peg Perego recalled thousands of strollers Thursday due to the death of a child who was strangled between trays on them.
A six-month-old California boy died of strangulation in a stroller in 2004. A seven-month-old New York girl was nearly strangled in the same manner in 2006.
The company said entrapment and strangulation can occur when the child is not harnessed into the stroller.
Peg Perego is recalling 223,000 strollers made between January 2004 and September 2007, including its Venezia and Pliko-P3 models. Strollers with a bumper bar or a tray with two cup holders are not included in the recall.
A new industry standard was put in place to address the problem later on.
Another company, Kolcraft Enterprises, Inc., is also recalling strollers due to potential falling and choking hazards.
The company is recalling roughly 5,600 of the Contours Options LT tandem strollers sold between February and July.
However, no injuries from those strollers have been reported.
