Male pill hope: The long search for a male birth control pill is not over -- but researchers say they have a promising new lead. The researchers were testing a cancer drug in mice when they found it was able to temporarily stop sperm production. It has not been tried in humans but "these findings suggest that a reversible, oral male contraceptive may be possible," a researcher tells NBC News.- Tobacco worldwide: Smoking long ago lost its cache in the United States. But that isn't true worldwide: Nearly half of men and a growing number of young women use tobacco in 14 countries included in the largest international study to date. Use is growing in some poor and middle-income countries targeted by marketers, researchers say.
- Concussion claim: Heads up football parents. If your young athlete is using a mouth guard called Brain-Pad, you should know that the Federal Trade Commission just told the manufacturer to stop claiming the product can prevent concussions. There's no scientific backing for that claim, the agency said.
Today's talker: Decades ago, researchers conducted a study that became famous for showing a link between strong self-control in preschoolers and later academic and social success. The kids who excelled were those who were able to delay gratification: They could resist eating a cookie or marshmallow for 15 minutes when promised a second treat as a reward. Now researchers -- showing a talent for delayed gratification themselves -- have reached back to that data collected between 1968 and 1974 to show that strong-willed kids were also less likely to become overweight adults. Unknown: Whether the kind of self control linked with slimness and success can be taught.
