âIf you have a latch please raise your hand as we count you.â At 10:30 am on Saturday, August 4th, 21 mothers joined the quest to break the record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously in the US at  The Big Latch On.
The event brings together groups of breastfeeding women at registered locations to nurse their child at a set time and remain latched on for one minute. Hackensack UMC Mountainside hosted the event to celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding and World Breastfeeding Week. âMore than 82 percent of the infants born here are being exclusively or partially breastfed upon discharge,â said Grettel Muscato, Director of Community Services for the hospital. âOur maternity staff includes two certified lactation consultants and nurses trained in breastfeeding protocol,â she added.  Breastfeeding classes for expectant mothers, as well as courses designed for parents, grandparents and siblings are offered throughout the year.
The Big Latch On supports communities with identifying and growing opportunities to provide ongoing breastfeeding support and promotion. The key to the Big Latch Onâs success is allowing communities to hold their Big Latch On events, empowering them to create an event that relates to the people of their community, while still taking part in a worldwide event.
