Theresa OâConner walked in honor of her mother Cathryn, who she said committed suicide in 2007.
âHad we seen the signs and if I had known how big a problem suicide was she might still be here,â OâConner said.
âAll of us here have been touched by someone that either committed suicide or attempted too,â added Rhonda Dunham, whose sign carried the slogan, âDonât Walk Away, Show Them Love and Make Them Stay.â
The group walked from Lakeside Drive to Lazy Harryâs hoping in the upcoming years more people will join in on the cause and walk farther in the city spreading suicide awareness.âMohave County has a high suicide rate. It is becoming an epidemic and unfortunately the mental health services are not the best,â Dunham said. âIf we can help just one person today, it makes a difference.â
According to the American Association of Suicidology, suicide is at its highest in the 34-65 age group and is the 10th highest leading cause of death in America, with an average of one person every 14 minutes killing themselves.Â
