Human case of West Nile virus confirmed in Dodge County
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Thursday that there have been two deaths from probable cases of West Nile virus.
The state Health Department told WISN 12 News that one death was a 78-year-old Milwaukee County woman and the other was a 71-year-old Waukesha County woman.
State health officials said there are 13 probable human cases in several counties -- including Milwaukee are Waukesha counties. All of the Waukesha cases were people over the age of 50.
The state Health Department said 18 dead birds have tested positive for West Nile virus.
The birds were found in 10 counties, including Kenosha, Milwaukee, Rock and Sheboygan.
"The positive bird means that residents of Kenosha County need to be more vigilant in their personal protective measures to prevent mosquito bites," Kenosha County Health Director Cynthia Johnson said.
Last month, West Nile virus was detected in three other dead birds. One of those was in Washington County.
A Dodge County resident was the state's first human case of the season.
Officials said the virus is hitting the state later than normal because of the hot, dry summer.
People are urged to take precautions when it comes to being around mosquitoes.
