While the number of West Nile virus cases in Ontario is climbing, P.E.I. has yet to see a single case.
The province has been monitoring for the virus for the past 13 years, said Dr. Lamont Sweet, deputy chief public health officer.
"It seems extremely unlikely now after 13 years that we would have a major problem with the virus here," Sweet said.
"What we found was that we have a very low percentage of the types of mosquitoes on P.E.I. that would tend to spread the virus. We also did not get any birds, or particularly crows, positive for the West Nile virus in spite of several years of monitoring."
Nova Scotia and New Brunswick also have had no reported cases of West Nile virus.
Sweet recommended Islanders travelling to areas where there are cases of the virus to take precautions such as using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved, light-coloured shirts and pants.
