After finding a second case of human West Nile virus infection in a nearby community, the state has raised the alert level to high in an area that includes Brookline. The period of highest risk for mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile is July until the fall. Most infections of people are mild, but older adults and those with compromised immune systems may experience more serious symptoms, including high fever, weakness, and headache. Residents are advised to avoid mosquito bites by using repellents with DEET, fixing screens, and emptying outside containers of standing water.
