People who use long term blood pressure medications may be at greater risk for developing lip cancer. The Kaiser Permanente study finds that drugs such as nifedipine and hydrochlorothiazide cannot only make a patient sensitive to sunlight but can increase the risk for cancer in the outer most layers of their lips and skin. However researchers say the lip cancer risk is are, and the that the benefits of the blood pressure drugs outweigh any risk.
And obese people who have weight loss surgery like gastric bypass or gastric band surgery are not at greater risk for broken bones in the first few years after their procedures. Studies have show that weight loss can lead to a reduction in bone density. But University of Southampton researchers found that the overall risk of fracture was not significantly increased because of surgery.
